ABSTRACT
This work is carried out to identify and discuss the need for a computer system in hotel business billing system.It deals with the system of all management and information needs of different sections of the hotel. Most time, the hotel runs into problems of getting necessary information in the section of registration of guest, guest booking and reservation, check-in and check-out processes of guests, and other section of the hotel use the account and security section. This study leads to the development of a computerized hotel business billing system which will help a long way in reducing the problems encountered by the entire management and staff of the hotel. The power of this application is also seen in the area where time is of great importance. This application will help immensely in eliminating wasted time in the operation of the hotel service, thereby enhancing effective customer services. However, the precise description of the system design, implementation, documentation and maintenance as well as the language used which is Visual Basic 6.0 and Microsoft Access as databaseis adopted in solving the declared problem.
1.8 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In the ancient times, all unit work together in the hospitality industries and service, use the obsolete manual method of extracting, storing, organizing and retrieving of information.
The hospitality Industries are no exemption, services done or practices in the hotel industry were handled manually. The rapid change from the period of manual handling of information document to the computer age has caused the need of the hotel management system to be automated.
Moreover, the top quality hotel in Nigeria is owned by government, other smaller hotels owned by individual do not keep to the standard for hotel operations. This is because the only reason for the setting up of a hotel is to maximize profit. They do not take into account the welfare and condition of their customer. This result in many of the customers not being satisfied after their stay in these hotel due to poor management and time wasting in the flow of information with and outside the hotel environment.
The CITADEL HOTEL AND SUITES management system, has been using the manual method, thereby making the basis of operation of hotel (e.g. room reservation, daily sales) time consuming. Most of the activities carried out involves the use of registers, forms, files, inks, stamp and paper record which are error-prone and could damage at any time.Therefore, in this project work computerization ofCITADEL HOTEL AND SUITES management system will be our main area of interest.
1.9 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The use of manual operation mode in CITADEL HOTEL AND SUITES has been associated with the following problems that has hampered the smooth operation of the hotel management system;
1. Difficulty in tracking rooms’ status
2. Difficulty in sourcing important information from existing records
3. Lack of backup of records
4. Computational error due to human factors
A computerized system will be able to rectify the above listed problems.
1.10 PROJECT GOAL
To design and implement a computerized system for CITADEL HOTEL AND SUITES.
1.11 OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH STUDY
In this project, we shall aim to achieve the following objectives;
i. Critical study of the operations of CITADEL HOTEL AND SUITES.
ii. Design a computerized system for CITADEL HOTEL AND SUITES.
iii. Implement the design using appropriate programming language and tools
iv. Install the design system in CITADEL HOTEL AND SUITES.
v. Make necessary recommendation to the management of CITADEL HOTEL AND SUITES.
1.12 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study is aimed at finding out how effective the computerization ofCITADEL HOTEL AND SUITESwill improve the operation of the hotel system.However, out of the several departments that makes up the hotel. This research project is restricted to only one section (reception office)of the hotel. The hotel management system welcomes many areas as such this project will only cover some carried out operation of hotel such as:
i. Hotel room reservation
ii. Daily sales management
