DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF COMPUTERIZED HOSTEL ALLOCATION SYSTEM FOR UNIZIK AWKA

ABSTRACT

The growing number of students in higher institutions all over the world has posed a lot of accommodation problem on the part of students and school management. Students at the beginning of each session waste half of the semester looking for accommodation. The few hostels that exist in the universities are not properly managed. Statistics of the number of rooms required to match the growing number of students are farfetched. Most often, students pay for hostel fee and end up not getting one due to lack of bed space. Hostel administrators cannot give accurate information of the occupancy of a particular room. These and many more form the statement of the problem that necessitated this research work. The aim of this study is to design and implement a hostel management allocation system for Nnamdi Azikiwe University. The methodology adopted for this research work is the Structured System Analysis and Design Methodology (SSADM), which was chosen by the researcher due to its numerous benefits. The software was completed and was tested and works very perfectly to replace all the errors in the existing system.

Statement of the Problem

1. How would one develop a central database system that would serve as hotel database.
2. How to Generate reports on hostel occupancy
3. What driven hostel allocation system for allocating hostel rooms to student.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to design and implement a hostel management allocation system for Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Other specific objectives includes:
1) Design and develop a central database system that would serve as hostel database, which will contain information on all the available rooms in the hostels.
2) Design a computer driven hostel allocation system for allocating hostel rooms to students.
3) To generate reports on hostel occupancy

1.5 Significance of the Study
Hostel Management System is software that is developed to help in managing various activities in the hostel. As is well-known, the educational institutions are rapidly increasing for the past few years. Therefore, it leads to mushrooming of hostels for the accommodation of the students study in these institutions. And hence there is the appearance of Hostel Allocation Management System which helps with dealing the problem of managing hostel and avoid the problem when do it manually.
The new system was designed to correct the errors of the existing system thereby replacing all manual methods which includes:
1. Facilitate timely allocation of hostel rooms to students
2. Check the hostel occupancy at any time for information management
3. Enable management to plan on improving hostel living condition.
4. Have firsthand information on the statistics of students in the hostel.

1.6 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study is to design and implement a hostel management allocation for Nnamdi Azikiwe University
The research work will cover among other things:
1. Hostel allocation
2. Hostel rooms registration
3. Student reports.
