EFFECT OF UNIONISM ON WORKERS WELFARE IN AN ORGANIZATION

ABSTRACT
This study focuses on the effect of unionism on workers welfare in Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi. The research design uses descriptive survey research in which questionnaire was used in the collection of data. The population consists of members of Non Academic Staff Union. Simple random sampling was used and to select respondent for the study. The main research instrument was questionnaire which was supported with interview. Data were collected via primary and secondary source. Chi-square statistics were used to test the hypothesis. The study revealed that workers perception of his Union will affect his assessment of the union in meeting his needs. The paper calculated that trade union is vital for the welfare of workers in an organization. The paper revealed that trade union should be encouraged in all work organizations.

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Trade union is an important institution in any industrial relation system. The union regards the workers as an important group among this industrial relation group. Nigeria Trade Union fight for the common interest of workers and in doing this, they negotiate with management of the organization.
Historically trade unions are a product of industrial revolution in Europe. They arose out of the movement of help among industrial workers in the condition of leases face capitalism fashion (1080:300).
The worker have learned from experience they can enhance their bargaining power by combination and gain some measure of control their wages and working condition and this make their live more secured.
Workers through a virtue union can achieve all these thus it is in view of this that the study want to look at the impact of trade union on workers welfare by using Auchi Polytechnic, as a case study.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Workers work in the organization in order to be able to achieve their needs. It is the attempt to satisfy these needs that make them to form and join unions.
Unions in an organization are therefore meant to fight for the improvement of their members welfare. Fighting for the welfare to member entail of their members are met and also making sure that their members are not exploited by the employment. It is in view of this that the researcher wants to look at the effect of trade union on the welfare of workers by using Auchi Polytechnic Auchi as a case study.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
This study helps to achieve the following objectives:
1. To examine the extent to which workers perception of his union can affect the assessment of his union in meeting his needs.
2. To ascertain if the attitude of management towards union affect the power of the union in fighting for the workers welfare.
3. To find out whether the recognition of trade union in an organization will affect its ability to fight for the welfare of the workers.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION
The following research question shall help to depict the thrust:
1. Does workers perception of his union affect the assessment of his union in meeting his needs?
2. Does the attitude of management towards union affect the power of the union in fighting for the workers welfare?
3. Does recognition of trade union in an organization affect its ability to fight for the welfare of the workers?
