ABSTRACT

 

This research was conducted with special reference to Coca – Cola Plant, Benin City. The objective of the study is to know the importance of good management to business organizations. Data were obtained through personal interview and the administration of questionnaires as well as secondary data. Data collected were subjected to chi-square test in order to prove or disprove hypotheses therein. The analysis of findings indicates that Coca Cola Plant good management to business organizations.

INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The word management has a multiple uses and can applied to many situation and circumstance. Therefore for our purpose in modern times we shall rather view management as an opening to both private and public sectors organizations. While management should be interpreted to mean a part of administration process which is concerned with the design and implementation of those systems and procedure that will help in meeting the stated organization objectives.

It can also be used to described the following situation

Ø An internal organizational or administrative process

Ø A science, discipline or art of getting things done through subordinate or people

Ø A career on occupation or a profession

Ø A collectivity of individuals running or operating a particular organization so as to achieve certain goals.

Probably the only aspect of the distinction that deserves to be emphasized has to do with the generic and circle nature of management functional process and the specific function of an administrator who co-operating to accomplish common goals.

Management is usually described as the process of designing and maintaining an environment in which individuals working together in groups accomplish efficiently selected aims.

Mary Parker Follet also see management as the process of getting things done through other people.

Henri Fayol’s book “Administration industries lie – el generate” from it original French version into English between 1929 and 1949 respectively.

As a foremost researched writer on management principles. His writings were quite instructive to what had grown to become different areas of specialization today both in administration and management. However, in its original contest management is used to indicate a specific function involving the supervision of the work of other.

Management therefore implies the total utilization of scarce resources in order to achieve predetermined organizational objectives. These resources comprise the materials, machines, money men and moment (time) of an organization, which are utilized to attain organization objectives.

Objectives are the reasons for established of an organization. Organizational objectives are intents, aspirations and wishes that the organization sets and pursues within a specific time period.

There are some element in management that promotes the efficiency in a business organization.

(a)         There are goals to be attained

(b)         There are resource to be utilized

(c)         There are groups of subordinates or people assigned specific task and responsibilities

(d)         The available resources are limited

(e)         The individuals contribution is necessary to achieve the Corporate goals.

Thus, management is the basic integrating process of work activities that surround the work environment for the achievement of her goals and objective.

Management is concerned with the process of planning, organizing, leading, staffing, coordinating and controlling. This effects of organizational members and utilizing resources to achieve given organizational goals and objectives.

Management help to cover the gap between the working slack and the efficiency of the subordinates.

In this situation we could asked: who is a manager? A manager is any person who makes other people to work so as to achieve a given goals.

It should be emphasized that economic, social and political development is for the efficiency of the management. The focus and their impacts especially the adverse ones need to be checked.

1.2       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problems of management for managing a business organizations are varied and complex in nature, the more are made to solve them, the more they multiply. These unhealthy conditions are made even worst by Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in general and the Inter back Foreign Exchange Market (IFEM) in particular. A one time president of (NACCIMA) Professor Ayo Ogunsheye in 1986, outline the problems that the business community is facing to include the following:

(a)     Inadequate protection from the government against foreign competition as some local manufactured products cannot compete with the imported ones dumped into the Nigeria market, sometime at a price below their production cost in their original countries.

(b)     The high rate of duty imposed on imported row materials

(c)     Frequent fluctuation in the exchange rates making it usually impossible for companies to make sensible forward planning for procurement of row materials and components from oversee.

(d)     Problems associated with land acquisition for industries particularly in southern parts of the country where the land use decree has only compounded the problem.

(e)     An unacceptable high rate of corporation income?

Managing a business today in Nigeria is challenging. In addressing the issues cited above the management would need to apply the functions of planning, organizing, directing and controlling in order to manage the work organization, people production process etc. more effectively in an unsteady and changing business environment.

Some managements lacks the ability to handle crises in a business organization because they did not qualify to handle managerial functions. Also some managers does not know the primary objectives of their position.

1.3       OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Managerial process are applicable in al the human organization, business and non business organizations formal and informal organizations. All organizations acquire resource from the environment these resource must be managed in a way as to ensure efficiency and optimum utilization.

However, the difference are how these processes and principles are applied as a result of cultural differences, nature of business and objectives to be achieved.

The following principles are design for management

  1. Safety and security of man and property
  2. Commercial activities of exchange of goods and services
  3. Financial activities
  4. production activities
  5. Accounting and statistical activities
  6. Managerial activities

These study is therefore design for the following

  1. The high rate of duty imposed on imported raw material
  2. Problem associated with land issue
  3. An unacceptable high rate corporation and income tax
  4. Inadequate sanitation arrangement at factory sites and the failure of local authorities to provide waste disposal service

1.4       RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. Do lack of management efficiency result to lack of goals and objectives in business organization?
  2. Does lack of proper planning of management affect the activities of a business organization?
  3. Does Poor communication work between the management and the subordinates in any business organization?

1.5       STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS

The following hypothesis has been formulated by the researcher:

Hypothesis I

Ho:    lack of management efficiency resulted to lack of goals and objectives in business organization.

Hi:     Effectiveness allowed management to achieved the business organizational goals and objectives.

Hypothesis II

Ho:    Lack of proper planning of management doe not affect the activities of a business organization.

Hi:     Lack of proper planning of management, affect the activities of a business organization.

Hypothesis III

Ho:    Poor communication do not work between the management and the subordinates will not hinder business functions in any business organization.

Hi:     Poor communication network between the management and the subordinates will hinder the business functions in any business organization.

1.6       SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The research will investigate if lack of management efficiency can result to lack of goals and objectives in business organization. The research will also examine if Poor communication network between the management and the subordinates will hinder the business functions in any business organization.      .

1.7       SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of this study is that it will help us to know the importance of management in a business organization.

Any business organization without a proper managerial inputs such business organization is like a vehicle without a driver.

This research work is to look at the importance of management in a business organization. Taking the Coca Cola plants in Benin City, the management has shown that management policy are the best impact on the business organization. This plant has also reviewed to us that a good managerial policy allowed the business not only its set goals and objective also, to meet the force of demand and supply.

This research work has shown the usefulness of management in a business organization.
